Kick-Ass 2 #3

From reading the preview pages, I got the distinct impression that the Asian bad guys aren't really bad guys, and I thought Millar was going to play a twist on us. As others have remarked, Millar's comic is inferior to the movie adaptation and this second opus reads as a disappointment so far. I still hope there's a twist coming like there was in the first one.
Tom Palmer completes the layouts and his finishing and inking look like what I was used to see from him in the previous decades. Romita Jr's art is so crude that it's Palmer and colorist Dean White painted color that prevent the art from looking too cartoony.

Megasauria

Inventé par Jack Kirby pour être adapté en série télé pour enfants, Devil Dinosaur s'arrêtera avec le départ de Kirby à la fin de son contrat avec Marvel. Le personnage n'a fait que d’éphémères apparitions depuis, toutes en dehors de son milieu d'origine. En fait les auteurs essaient de le plonger dans l'univers Marvel où il détonne. Paru en France dans le magazine phare d'Arédit, Etranges Aventures, la série semble avoir marqué Jean-Marie Arnon qui, avec Megasauria, paru en 2009, nous offre pour la première fois, une suite thématique. Passionné de préhistoire et de science fiction, l'auteur a le profil idéal pour cette série.

Rétro

Ce qu'il y a de bien avec les comics de nos jours, c'est que même si on n'aime pas le style actuel, on trouve des comics de toutes les époques. Non seulement, les éditeurs mettent sur le marché des collections de leurs anciens comics, mais ils produisent dans le présent des comics au style rétro.
En ce moment Marvel publie The Iron Age qui nous a présenté des aventures des Vengeurs, de Power Man/Iron Fist et de Captain Britain des années 80 ainsi que la Torche humaine des années 70. Les prochains épisodes revisiteront Dazzler et les X-Men vers 1980.
Marvel a aussi vidé ses fonds de tiroir et publié des inédits datant des années 80 à 2001 qui mettent en scène le Dr Strange, les Défenseurs, un team-up entre Hulk et la Torche Humaine, Nomad et Gambit et les Champions dans des histoires au style retro. Ainsi l'histoire du Dr Strange rend hommage à Ditko et nous présente l'origine de la maison du docteur. L'histoire des Champions est en fait un flashback de Gambit réalisé par George Tuska. Celle des Défenseurs (de 2001) présentent l'équipe d'origine du début des années 70.

On trouve cette influence à des degrés divers: la série Alpha Flight n'est pas dans un style rétro mais ramène l'équipe à ce qu'elle était à son lancement.

Quant à DC qui se prépare à relancer ses personnages, ils ont décidé de rendre hommage à leurs séries pérennes (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Justice League) en revisitant les années 70, 80 et 90 avec des scénaristes (et parfois des dessinateurs) emblématiques de cette époque.

Toujours chez DC, le nouveau prodige Nick Spencer écrit T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents avec dans chaque épisode une séquence qui a lieu dans les années 80 dessinée par Mike Grell et une séquence rétro des années 60.
Herc est une excellent série. Les auteurs Pak et Van Lente suppriment le côté super-héroïque du personnage de Lee et Kirby pour revenir au héros mythologique. Herc n'est plus divin, il a "seulement" sa force de héros mortel. Les auteurs le transposent néanmoins dans l'univers Marvel et le confrontent uniquement à des personnages inspirés de la mythologie: Man-Bull inspiré du Minotaure, Basil Elks, le Basilic, Hecate, le Griffon. Le crossover avec Fear Itself est un des plus intelligents: la série préserve son identité. Dans un futur numéro, il rencontrera Elektra, elle aussi inspirée de la mythologie.

Bref, la grande difficulté de l'univers Marvel est qu'il est surpeuplé. Les lecteurs ne veulent pas d'une série qui se situent en dehors, ni de séries qui sont de vulgaires copies de celles qui existent déjà. Herc réussit le pari de concilier ces deux exigences.
